I recently set up a small office network with win2k3 server, two win2000 machines, and a vista machine.

I have not set up a domain. I shared a printer, which I can access from teh vista machine by \\My2k3Server\HPPrinter
just fine.

but from with w2k machines, that name doesn't work. I can only get to the printer by \\192.168.0.10\HPPrinter

why doesn't the computer name work from the win2000 machines?

DNS issues. Check that the W2K machines are setup properly with DNS.

ok - does it have anything to do with WINS - thanks

ok, thanks for reminding me of that, as it's been a while since i've done network stuff, Now - if I intall the WINS server role on my Server2k3 installation, isn't this supposed to obviate the need to manually update lmhosts files?
