Connecting to a card reader

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to how I can go about detecting and reading from a card reader?

I'm using Access 2003 and windows XP

Doesn't the card reader hook in the keyboard and just look like keyboard input?

The card reader is USB connected but my problem is, I have no idea what kind of code I will use to detect and communicate with the card reader so for instance when the user swipes on the card reader I detect the swipe and pop up a password dialog form.

I could be wrong but I believe it will come in as keyboard input. Have you tested the setup yet?
