I have ADSL-connection, and in my ADSL-box there is four RJ-45 cable places, so I can connect four computers to the box. When I connect two computers to the box, computers can see each other and I can excahnge files just like I can do if I connect through HUB. But when I connect the third computer to the box, it's not connected to two other computers, although I've put it in the same workgroup, but all computers have acces to internet. If I use ipconfig, I see that two compouters, which are connected to each other, have the same default gateway, although I have the Obtain an IP address automatically option chosen in all three computers. But the third computer have different. In two computers it's 80.186.16.1 and in third it's 80.186.16.1. I don't know if this affects to my problem. Also the IP-address in two computers is other wise the same, except the last numbers, which are 28 and 29, but the third is quite totally different. I haven't set any IP-addresses myself. The two computers which are connected are: the first is Win XP computer and the second is portable computer with Win 2000. The third computer is normal Win 2000 computer.

I've also pinged the IPs and had replies from all IPs and default gateways.

adsf1324,

Could you provide some more information on your ADSL connection box? Look for a manufacturer and model number.

The fact that the IP address on the third computer is completely different is what is preventing it from seeing the other computers and vice versa. It sounds like it is in a different subnet. If you have not monkeyed with any of the protocols then chances are you are just using NetBEUI to share and that is a non-routable protocol. In other words, all computers must be on the ame subnet to use it.

Post back with the ADSL info and we'll try to help.

This is A-link ADSL External, ADSL Ethernet Router, but I don't think that the problem is in it. I noticed that if I choose to obtain IP-addresses automatically, they are permanent for a while, but sometimes they just change, and same in default gateway. They usually work well when I set IP's manually, but then I would have to set the DNS manually too, and I don't know it, so I can't use internet.

At the command prompt on the problem machine type ipconfig /release. Reboot and see if you've got a correct IP address. Also, I don't have this router so I can't give you specifics, but check the router administration settings - Make sure is set to be a DHCP server for at least 3 client computers (I think that if Win 2K doesn't get an IP from a DHCP server, it will just use whatever).

adsf1324,

Is the router the Roadrunner44? AVAKS is the manufacturer and their web site requires a log on to get the manuals. Open the web interface and check the settings for the DHCP server as smah suggested. Make sure it is set to provide enough addresses for your network.

Note that DHCP is used in two senses with a router. Your ADSL connection can be DHCP and that applies to the WAN or public address you get from your ISP. The router also serves as a DHCP server to give local or private IP addresses to your computers. Yes, they may change. That is the nature of DYNAMIC host control protocol (DHCP). That is normal. As long as all your computers are set to obtain an IP address automatically, they should all get addresses in the same range or subnet.

Is the third address like 169.254.x.x? If so, that is an address the computer is supplying itself since it can not find the DHCP server. It is called Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). Does this machine have a different type network card? Have you tried changing the cable with a computer that is working? Try reconfiguring the network interface. If it is set to autosense the speed/duplex nature of the connection, try setting it to 10/half duplex. If it is set to a specific speed/duplex, try setting it to autosense.

Hope that helps.

You can assign your PC's with an IP address with an IP scheme like 192.168.10.22,23, and 24 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 then use the router's IP address as your default gateway. You might want to disable wins configuration and you must set up the DNS configuration and that information should be provided by your DSL provider (usually 2 IP's). This is how I setup my clients LAN even though they connect to a switch before touching the router. but that doesnt matter. Using either the router as a switch or a switch. Switches are cheap for a 4 or 8 port model. Hope this might help.
