Hi there,

I have an SQL server running version 2000 and one still on version 6.5. Before upgrading the latter I would like to transfer the data from one to the other...
But when trying to view the 6.5 server in the 2k one it doesn't get the connection right: "Server is not running or not there"-message...

To cut it short: Is it possible to see a 6.5 server in a 2k server?

Hi

In a nutshell...no you can't see a 6.5 server in Enterprise Manager in 2000. You can connect to a 6.5 server via Query Analyser to view the data.

You can also setup a linked server to query the data. The only way to see the server in 2000 is to upgrade the client tools to version 7.0 on the 6.5 server. DTS also requires the tools to be upgraded.

I tried once more to DTS before I replied but also got the error. The error suggests that you run instcat.sql against the 6.5 server which is in a folder in SQL 2000 which will enable OLE DB connections between 2000 and 6.5

Have a look at sp_addlinkedserver and linked servers in BOL to find out more about instcat.sql and where to locate it.

Hope this helps

John
