I have just installed Sharepoint on a web server sitting on my DMZ and am trying to connect it to a sql server on the private network. When I get to the Database setup screen, I am not able to connect to the sql server. I get a login fail message (Login failed for user 'psi\sharepoint'. (Error code: 18456).
) I have all the correct permissions set and I have tried manullly creating the database.
Just looking for any other ideas?
Thanks

Hello,

Are you sure that your firewall will let Windows accounts talk from the DMZ to the private (internal) network.
Usually most traffic between the DMZ and the private network is blocked.

What I did for an extranet solution I setup was to use SQL server authentication and only needed to open one port (and yes it is stated that SQL servewr authentication is not as secure as using windows authentication but using ssl from the outside atleast secures the communication abit). If you are going to let a domain account communicate with the internal network you would have to open up a bunch of ports, which will create security risks aswell.

But since you get a login fail, it sure sounds like you do not have permissions to talk from DMZ to Private via windows authentication.

Regards,
Thomas

Thomas,

Thanks for your feedback. I have gotten this two work. What I did was reinstalled service pack 3a for sql and that seems to have solved the problem.

Hello,

Yes servicepack 3a is good to use :) otherwise it does not work well. Good that you sorted it out!
