I can't seem to define a SQL Server in Enterprise Manager that will connect to our overseas SQL server. Both are SQL 2000 SP3, and I've created the client alias, using the TCP/IP protocol, and telling it what port to use. We believe we'ver opened up the firewall for this IP/port combination on both ends, but can't seem to get it to connect. It says it doesn't exist, or connection refused. Is this a timeout issue, and if so, how do I correct it?

Anyone do this successfully?

have you tried connecting specifying the IP address not the server name?

Yeah, I've tried both by IP and by named client connection

can you ping the remote name and ip?

It's working now. It had to do with the order rules were processed on our firewall. Go figure.

Sometimes the port number will be changed by NT admin /DBA.It might happen long time back. You should always comfirm port number with NT admin /DBA ,not only depends on "Dynamically determine port"
