Connecting Apache 2.0.40 httpd and Tomcat 4.1.12

How do I connect the Apache httpd 2.0 and Tomcat 4.1.12 on Red Hat Linux 7.3 ? I followed the docs but could not find the binary for mod_jk.so for Linux and neither the source mod_jk.c ?

Also, what exactly happens when you connect the two ? Does the httpd start the tomcat on jsp/servlet requests or both servers need to be started up individually and only the certain requests are redirected ?
