Connecting another computer to a hub

I have Roadrunner and have connected another computer using a hub. I cannot get the computer to connect to the Internet. When I put the roadrunner cd in it says I do not have a NIC card. I checked the device manager and I have a 3 com 3C920 and a 1394 Net adapter. I see the light blinking in the back of the computer where the patch cord is. I have turned off my hub and the affected computer says that Internet connection has been lost. I am running Win XP PRO. The computer acts like it wants to connect but does not. The hub port light is on. When I go to the properties of the 3com 3C920 it shows traffic coming in. I have an Intel Pentium III Dell Optiplex GX110, 930 MHZ.

I kind of remember having the same problem on another Dell but forgot how I fixed it. The affected computer just acts like everything is getting to the hardware but the software is stopping it. Hope someone can help. Thank you.

OK, you may have a few problems.

The 3 com 3C920 is the NIC, the 1394 Net adapter is a firewire card - which may be interfering. See (long!) thread779-642476 for help on this issue.

I see the light blinking in the back of the computer where the patch cord is.
You should have a link light on the NIC and a link light on the hub. Each light shows the condition for a seperate pair of connections - you need both lights to confirm the physical connection is OK.


A lot of ISPs restrict net access to specific MAC address (i.e. a particular NIC). Plus, you can normally only connect one PC at a time: to have both online would require 2 IP addresses, which usually costs extra.

You should consider buying a router (can be as cheap as $30). Set it up this way:
[tt]ISP -- modem -- router -- hub -- PCs[/tt]

Your router receives your public IP address, and the PCs are allocated private IP addresses (usually beginning 192.168.x.x). If you need any help on this, just ask!

I have an Intel Business 8 port hub. The cable leading from the hub to my son's computer has a light on, and the NIC card light is blinking. Also when I go into the properties of the 1394 adapter it shows traffic coming in. So my hub should be working correctly??? I made the cable, could there be a problem with the cable?? Also remember that when I power the hub off the affected computer pops up a window that say Local area Network connection is lost.

I will try the other suggestions in the tread that was given to me. Thank you.

Problem fixed. Bought a router. Thank you for all the help.

Glad your problem is solved - buying a router is probably the simplest way of getting a multitude of computers onto the internet.
