I have an as400 running on a token ring network and am trying to connecting a printer to it so that I do not get the messages that PRTO1 is unavailable. Can anybody help me with how to connect the printer either directly to the as400 or some other way? The printers are various models of HP laserjets.

Thanks in advance.

Look at a print server from Axis.

.... oh, and by the way, I've requested an AS/400 forum be started. Watch for it! :)

Not that I'm aware of, per se.

PRT01 is your primary printer, which uses a print controller. You can just vary it off and the error should go away. Make sure you turn off "Online at IPL"

If you have an Ethernet port in your AS/400, you can set it up for TCP/IP Printing through Ethernet.

If you don't have Ethernet, and you're only running TwinAx, you're going to need a converter; I don't think that HP makes a TwinAx NIC for their printers (although you can check their site).

The kicker of it is that it wants to see a controller, not just a printer out there. As far as the AS/400 is concerned, each device is it's own controller; whether it be a terminal, ethernet card, etc. Think of it this way; the AS/400 isn't limited to just the box it's housed in; every device is an "extension" of the system. It can be turned off, turned on, etc.
