Connecting a USB Modem to an S8700

Hello

I have been asked to connect USB modems to a pair of S8700's (CM3) for the first time. Although the system has been in and running for 2 years, this week is the first time I have been allowed remote access. I have connected them to the USB's at the back of the servers (top one or does it matter?).I have added them via the web interface and I have also added a remote login as remote. I can dial the number, it answers and then is very very slow. I have only managed to connect once via ppp but then it was so slow that it drops any subsequent connections. Any ideas why this is so?
