I have a SCSI Nikon LS-201 35mm scanner that I need to connect to my Shuttle PC. It has no spare 5¼" bay, so I thought that the following solution would be the easiest way to get it back up and running:

Purchase an external SCSI housing
Purchase a USB-SCSI adapter cable

Would this work? Would it be better to install the Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI card and get the appropriate external SCSI cable? (The same scanner/card were previously used internally with a ribbon cable.)

I don't use the scanner very often: it is a long-term project to transfer 30 years of negatives and transparencies to digital media, so I like the convenience of the USB solution. However, I'm not sure that the drivers will let it work through the SCSI-USB adapter.

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

I have no idea how well the USB/SCSI adapter would work, but my instinct would be to keep it simple; install a SCSI PCI card with an external connector, and connect it to the scanner with a SCSI cable. I use that arrangement myself, and have never had any trouble with it.

I agree! a PCI SCSI card is the easiest/cheapest and probably the most efficient way to go, you don't need a free bay.
SCSI cards generally have external as well as internal connections.

Thanks all. I'll go the full SCSI way then. My feeling was that it is the surest way to proceed as there is a definite doubt about the USB-SCSI adapter working.

USB to scsi will not work most of the time and when it does, if you use another USB device ( like a mouse) the scan will fail, got that directly from Nikon US technical support. Go directly to a scsi controller to use a SCSI scanner, USB to scsi works for stuff like zip drives and cd-roms pretty well, things that depend on ASPI, not so well.

Thanks for the confirmation. I am definitely going that route and have already ordered a 5¼" SCSI case for the scanner.
