Connecting a Partner to a PC via LAN

The Avaya documentation indicates that the Partner system can be interfaced to a PC via a LAN, but neglects to be more specific. I downloaded the software for the PC from the website, but the help files don't (as usual). So.... How do you accomplish this? I'm dealing with a Partner ACS R3 with 3 308 cards installed and a Partner Mail R1 (4 port)associated. It can't be as easy as plugging a system port into a LAN port.

Are you refering to administering the Partner Messaging R1 via the LAN port and the GUI software? If so, it is a matter of setting an IP address in the Partner Messaging, connecting to the network, and running the GUI on a PC connected to the network.

It requires a 355 adapter and a terminal program, OR a modem and a terminal program to set the IP.

Also, the 1600 DSL module has a LAN port allowing you to share an SDSL connection between voice and data. The LAN connection allows remote administration of the module in addition to data traffic.

The 1600 DSL module requires ACS release 4.0 or greater.

Thanks to both for your quick responses! Actually, I'd like to administer both from the network, but neither unit directly supports Ethernet. I figure I can find a serial-to-Ethernet adapter to connect between the 9 pin Dsub on the mail unit and a LAN port, which covers that part. And I have successfully tested a hyperterm file that 'speaks' to the voicemail unit, so I know what settings work. I guess I could do the same thing for the ACS by converting the RJ45 to Dsub, then to Ethernet, but I have been unsuccesful getting a response from the ACS. I have tried observing the SMDR output (unsucessfully so far) to be sure my hyperterm settings are correct before trying to communicate with the system. In browsing the Partner threads, I noted several (differing) references to settings, none of which have worked for me. Any additional tips would be appreciated.

Well, unlike Merlin Legend and Magix, the Partner ACS processor does not have an Admin RJ45 jack on it. The SMDR jack is output only. The Partner ACS is either administered from a System Phone (using the buttons and display), or by the Remote Admin modem plugged into the PCMCIA slot. With Remote Admin, you have to dial in, using a modem on your admin PC.

It would be great if there were remote admin via ethernet, and perhaps you could show us how to easily front-end a modem with ethernet and the right software.

Good luck.
