Connecting 2948G-L3 (IOS) to 4912 (CatOS)

I have an existing network consisting of a Cisco 2948G-L3 switch connecting to a couple of 3548 switches via the two giga-bit interfaces. I now need to add additional workgroup switches (i.e. more 3548's), so I want to add the 4912 as a giga-bit backbone.

The 2948G-L3 switch has multiple bridging groups configured, and therefore had several subinterfaces defined on the giga-bit interface (i.e. physical interface 49 - subinterfaces 49.1, 49.2, 49.3 etc), with each subinterface connected to one of the bridging groups.

When I connect this device to the 4912, only one of the subinterfaces becomes associated with the giga-bit port on the 4912 - that is, I can communicate with one of the subnets on the 2948G-L3, but not the others.

Since I can't seem to create sub-ports on the 4912, nor can I add the one physical interface on the 2948G-L3 to multiple bridging groups, I am at a loss to see how to connect these two devices.

Any suggestions on which way to head would be greatly appreciated. I may be getting myself confused with the differences between VLAN's and Bridge Group's.

One thing I have done is to wipe the config from all devices and just plug them together. Using their default configs like this I have proven that the physical connections are sound, fibre cables are correct polarity, etc. However, once I load the current production configs back into the 2948G-L3, I lose connectivity between the 2948G-L3 and the 4912.

Thanks,
Aaron Power.
