Hi.

I am trying to connect my laptop to my server
over an home ehternet lan. They are both win
professional (not win server) machines and
the servcer is set up with oracle. I am trying
to get the laptop to access the oracle database
on the server but am having problems. when i run
ipconfig, in each case the computers cannot see
eachother but can see ethemselves. In both cases,
I see that IP routing is not enabled, DHCP is
enabled, there is no default gateway and, in the
case of the server, no DNS server.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Can you ping the other machines IP?? both in the same workgroup? running client for M$ networks???? If you like my post let me know if I blow an answer...well it's probably late and I have had too many beers! Cheers!!

no, i cannot ping the other machine. they only recognize their own IPs.

Hey,
If you have just two PCs why are you using DHCP? Then one of them should be DHCP server! And a DHCP server should have a FIXED address! Gia Betiu

I just had the same problem.... Are you using a crossover cable?

no. I actually got them working by setting each
machines IP address to:
192.168.0.1 and
...2

hope this helps...

If you have fixed addresses, that's OK ( I don't know what you mean saying that you have DHCP enabled!).
Try
ping localhost (this will tell you if TCP/IP stack is loaded correctly)
ping <ip_addr_2> (ping the ip address of the other one)
-if it is not working, then you have a problem with the cable or the network card(s). Gia Betiu

OK Thanks.
Yes, the DHCP server was not on. Sorry for the misinfo.
i solved the problem as described above (by reseting my
IP addresses). Thanks again for all your help.
