I have just recently joined a company that has just merged with another similar sized organization.

Company 1
70 Users
Head Office
6 Servers – Windows 2003, Exchange 2003, File Store
4 MB ADSL

Company 2
50 Users
2nd Site
6 Servers – Windows 2003, Exchange 2003, File Store
4MB SDSL

Prior to me starting there was a VPN setup between the two sites and they are now on the same domain and exchange has been linked up with 2 information stores one for company 1 users physically in company 1 and the other for company 2 users physically in company 2.

The problem I am having is when users that move from one site to the other, a user from company 1 uses a PC physically in site 2 (and vice-versa) try to access their mailbox and try to use files stored not in their physical location.

I am considering replacing the VPN link over ADSL/SDSL with a 10 Mb or 100 Mb leased line between sites.

My questions
1. If I implement a 100Mb link between sites
a. What Exchange configuration should I implement, move this to one server?
b. File sharing, should I implement DFS?
2. If I implement a 10Mb link between sites
a. Given the numbers mentioned above would this bandwidth be sufficient ?
b. What Exchange configuration should I implement, move this to one server?
c. File sharing, should I implement DFS?
3. Should I consider any other options for connectivity other than Leased Lines

Much Thanks

Well in regards to DFS I really should refer you to this article

it covers in great detail the new replication model (RDC) which was designed for site instances using a WAN replication solution, and in your case seems like a logical step.

There is piece about file conflicts as well that may help clarify the possible issues in regards to users checking out the same file in different sites that you should understand as well.

As far as Exchange goes what are your options when it comes to upgrading to 2007 (I am terrible with conceptual site design in 2003)? I am hoping Pat chimes in with some recommendations on this part.

Good luck!
