I have a pc which I recently upgraded from 2000 to windows XP sp2. After finally working out what I thought were the last of my issues with the upgrade I come to find that I cannot browse the web. I am able to ping websites as well as send email but I get a "search page cannot be opened" when I attempt to browse.
I have IE6 as well as FireFox installed on the pc and both cannot browse. I have run Microsofts Anti-spyware and it did not find anything. Also in searching this site I can accross a winsock fix app and ran that as well but it did not fix it. I know for a fact that other computers can brows on the same network. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Are you pinging via an ip address or the websites domain name?

You know... when I see this I immediately think this machine is not acting as I would expect... why is it trying to open some search page?

I bet you that you have a "really handy toolbar" or some such "add-on" that has insinuated itself into the inner workings of IE.

Give the Lavasoft Ad-aware software a go and see if it picks up anything you may have missed with other tools.

Cheers,
Jeff

I am able to ping website domain names such as yahoo.com or google.com.

I have also run microsoft's anti spyware and cleaned up any reminents of adware. I will infact try to run Lavasofts ad-aware to see if I missed anything.

I am leaning towards it not being an Ie problem being that I installed Firefox and recieved the same results.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

I figured out the issue. It seems that Norton Internet Security did not like the upgrade. I believe my http traffic was being routed to a proxy that was set up by Norton. Once I uninstalled Norton Internet security I was able to browse the web. Thanks for your help.
