Connect XP to 98 via a usb to usb cable

Hi All

I have a laptop running win98se and another laptop running windows XP pro. I use to be able to tranfere my files from one machine to the other when they were both runing 98 via a usb link cable but now they won't reconise each other. how can i link the two machine together with this cable.
