Our department has our own subnet / vlan space and we are looking at adding a VPN on one of our public IP's to allow remote connection. Once connected, it would be necessary to log into the Windows domain, using domain credentials, to gain access to the domain based network shares.

I have setup VPN access before, but never involving Windows domains. How would one go about authenticating to the the domain in this process?

Also, is there are particular type/make/model or brand of router that wold work well that isn't prohibitively expensive, works with Windows clients, and preferably allows certificate authentication.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Unless there is some new technology out there that I don't know of you need to join the domain like any other PC, requiring network admin level permission. Can you RDP to your workstation once you establish the VPN?

What do you currently have for a VPN peer, how many concurrent VPNs, do you want IP-Sec or SSL based, ect?
