Greetings,

Anybody out there can advise how do I connect to a sun solaris server using a cable and hyper terminal?

And is the cable a console cable that Cisco router uses or a null modem cable ?

What will be the first thing you see when u connect using hyper terminal ? Will it prompt u for root account and password ?

Appreciate any advice and thanks in advance.

Hi,

depends on what machine you want to connect to...
The newer Fire-Class servers have often RJ45 Plugs for Serial-connections.

Normally you have an serial D-SUB25 Port at your SUN and a DSUB-9 on your notebook/PC/terminal.
There are adapters from sun where you can fit this together.
(normally one adapter is delivered with the server)
then you can use the normal rj45 cable to connect.
In hyperterm just configure your com-port-session with 8-n-1
and maximum (!) 9600 baud.
et voila. the system should give you the login-prompt
"login:"
or whatever you might have configured on your machine.
Or your in the bootprom and it tells you a simle "OK "
But after connecting you need to hit once ENTER.
Otherwise you will see nothing ;-)

Nico

Hi Coroner,

For the RJ45 cable, do u use a straight or cross cable to connect it the to serial adapter provided ?

Appreciate your advise.

Thanks a million

I use a straight cable. No crossover.
(This way it is mentioned in the Admin-Guide from the machine)
but this is a horrible theme.
I've an "annex" (serial-port-switch, connected at one side to the network and on the 8 ports to the serialports of my servers) and since the servers came with those rj45-serials no serial conn. worked
but my notebook.
so good luck for this and keep on trying...
My 'constuction' looks at follows:
Servers RJ45 Port->
straight cable RJ45->ends up with RJ45->
plugs into SUNPart#530-2889-03 02/49 (RJ45 to Dsub25 male)->
gender changer Dsub25 with both sides female) ->
normal old mouseport adapter from DSub25 to Dsub9 ->
plugged in my notebook
configured the terminal soft to 8-n-1 and 9600 to com1
hit enter once.
ready

So good luck
hope it helps.
