Hi!

I'd like to connect my oracle database in ms excel.
I know if I have proper tns configuration it works well but what to do if my computer doesn't have net manager where I can set tns etc?? Is it possible to connect having only odbc drivers??

Thanks for any response

regards

Bartec

The ODBC drivers shipped with Oracle require a local copy of the Oracle Client software. The ODBC driver does a callout to TNS, which reads sqlnet.ora to determine what type of names resolution you are using, such as tnsnames. It then reads tnsnames (or whatever resolution method you are using) which tells TNS how to find the database. TNS does the connection, and passes the connection off to the ODBC driver.

It maybe possible to get a connection using only ODBC, but I don't think so using the Merrant ODBC drivers from Oracle. In any event, it would be unsupported by Oracle and may lead to adverse consequences against your data.

In 10g there is Easy Connect. Just copy a few files to the client and you're set. Check it out.
