I am trying to connect to a computer on my network using
\\computer_name\C$
but it gives me this message:

\\computer_name\C$
The network path was not found

Anyone has any idea why?

The computer is on

Thanks

Then you need to edit the lmhosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc (XP) or C:\Winnt\System32\drivers\etc (W2K) and add the following:

x.y.z.w computer_name #PRE

Where x.y.z.w is the IP of the computer you are trying to connect to, and computer_name is the actual name of it. Then, save and close the lmhosts file, and run "nbtstat -R" to reload the remote cache name table.

You can verify this by connecting to \\w.x.y.z\C$ where the w.x.y.z is the IP address of the host that you are trying to connect to.

BTW, you should disable the default shares, they are a dangerous security loophole.

thanks, I figured it out
Windows firewall was on and was blocking access to the computer.

Thanks everyone
