Hi

I have RedHat 7.1 installed and have xinetd setup to let any defined user TELNET and FTP to the server(no guests or anonymous).

It works fine for all users except root. I know it's not good practice be able to TELNET in as root, but I really want to be able to FTP in as root. When I try to FTP in as root it just comes back with a message saying 'Invalid login'.

Regards.

I wouldn't recommend using the root account to login via telnet or FTP. SSH is a much better alternative to telnet. I've never used Wu-FTPd (I prefer ProFTPd), but the /etc/securetty file lists all tty's from which the root account can login. If this file is empty, then root can only login via the console. Maybe the solution is in this file?

i recommand the use of sftp, which come with openSSH you can make an encrypted connection with root or other account.
For wu-ftpd be carfull because frequentlly, there is exploit dicovred and the user/pass travel in ASCII text over the network.
But if you really know what you do, just look at /etc/ftpaccess (man ftpaccess)

To enable root FTP access to your box
you need to delete the 'root' line from
/etc/ftpusers
which, contrary to logic is a list of
users that CANNOT login!
