I have a PC running Windows XP Home and a G4 running OS X 10.3.1. I have set it it up so that files can be shared between the two but I need to know how can I access the internet on my Mac through the PC.

How do you have files shared between the two? How do you have internet access going to the Windows computer? Are you using a router/hub/switch?

Have just connected a cat5 cable. Ran the home network wizard and then on the Mac connected via ip address and username/password.

On the Mac it says "built-in ethernet is currently active and has the Ip address x.x.x.2. You connected to the Internet via Built-in Ethernet."

The Ip address of the pc is x.x.x.1

If they can "talk" how comew the internet connection is not being shared?

Internet acces to the windows computer is ADSL through USB modem

No router/hub/switch

These are home machines

Consider setting up a proxy on your Windows computer to share the internet connection. I do not recall if XP Home comes with internet connection sharing (maybe just XP Pro) so you may need a free proxy like the one at
Beware the pitfalls with creating a proxy. Make sure that users in the outside world cannot jump on to it and abuse your connection.

A $40 router/firewall would be ideal for ease of use and security.

how do i go about setting up the proxy on windows? yeah home does have internet connection sharing

I agree with jimoblak--I think your easiest course of action would be to get a firewall/route (like a Linksys) and use that instead of setting up a proxy or using ICS. You can even use DHCP on your firewall so you don't need to worry about configuring IP settings on your computers.

Ok guys, this may be the best way to go but very soon I will more than likely be sharing the internet connection with others in my home. Can you possibly direct me in a good direction, i.e. which one to get?

Is there a short term solution for now though?

On my network here at work I have frequently struggled with getting my one Mac user configured. I recommend getting a firewall/router because you don't have to configure machines manually, and you can get these router/firewalls with eight ports or more which should be enough for what you're planning at your home.

As to getting it done right now, you might want to look at the IP settings in the Mac and make sure the gateway is pointing to your ICS machine. I'm not sure where that setting is, but that's the setting that tells your Mac where to go to get out.

HTH,

Joe

Thanks Joe,

I used to have many probs with my own Mac at work but got it sorted for good. now, back to the prob at hand, it seems that when I changed my Macs TCP/IP configuration to getting ip address using dhcp everything worked out fine and can now surf using the mac and also connect to my work using VPN, thanks everyone.
