Would like to connect to my Linux Box (redhat) via my windows PC. Remote Desktop would be nice, I have PC anywhere 11.5 says Linux on it but not sure how to install it, and tried VNC but cant get that to work properly.
I just did this last week between my disktop PC and Linux Server. Many Linux distros include a "Remote Console" server sometimes called Console Sharing. You will need to enable the server portion of that so it is resident and running on your Linux box.
Then on the PC locate, download and install a utility called "VNC" client. I used "TightVNC". Once installed on the PC simply start it and supply a hostname and port (usually 5901) and once connected it provides an exact image of the GUI console.
Thanks for responding, I tried the VNC method, I just can't get it to work. I enabled the vnc service where the Xvnc is running. Then I installed tightvnc on my pc and attempted to run my hostname:5901 and it always says failed to connect to server. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
By the way I do not know where I can find "remote console" on the linux box.
A new session is created each time you run VNC. (Unlike the Windows version)
So each user has his/her own desktop.
Also, you need to set a password for the session using vncpasswd.
You connect to it with the VNC Viewer app by putting in the ServerName:sessionid ie. linuxserver:1 for the 1st session.
In the home directory of the user that started the VNC server, is a directory called .vnc
You can edit the file Xstartup to change the plain old twm Window Manager to something else like KDE / Gnome etc.
