Connect Laptop to Lan

Hi,
I want to connect my laptop to the Lan in my school, i know the laptop has a network card, but what else do i need to connect it up, ie cables, info etc to connect it up properly?
where should i start?

well you need a cat 5 cable, the tcpip settings (dhcp, static etc) and for the internet if your on a proxy, the dns, the gateway, wins, whatever may be enabled, ask the admin for that, and a username/password also, the admin will know of anything special
