I may not have posted in the correct forum...
Apologies and please point me in the direction.

I need to temporarily connect a Win 98SE PC to a Win XP so I can transfer data files. (My wireless network is 802.11B, so is a bit slow for the graphic files.) I have a crossover cable and did this in a classroom 4 years ago, but memory fails me.

Please advise how to configure the NIC cards and other relevant requirements so that I can copy files.

Note the differing Win versions, please, and it would help me if the reponse was at the level "Networking for Dummies" (LOL). The Win98 PC is presently on a wireless network, but will be replaced by the XP box after copies are completed.

Thanks in advance!
Bob

HTH,
Bob [morning]

No configuration needed for the LAN cards, just plug the 2 PC's together.

Give each PC an IP address with the same IP/Subnet etc:

98 PC - 10.0.0.1, 255.255.255.0
XP PC - 10.0.0.2, 255.255.255.0

To confirm you have set it up correctly, goto run type cmd on the XP PC and type, ping 10.0.0.1. If you get a response.....

.....create a share on the XP PC, open it up to all user for the time being.

On the 98 PC goto run then type \\10.0.0.2\"nameofshare", then copy the files over to the XP PC.

You may encounter issues with authentication from the 98 to XP pc, if you do post back.

Thanks, Paul.

I shut down the two PC's, connected the cable, and powered them up. Win98 had no comment, but WinXP gave me an error message about duplicate names on the network...?

I'm not sure where to look.

Also, on WinXP I went to My Computer, Network connections, and see the ethernet adapter telling me the
IP Address is: 169.254.0.53
Subnet Mask is: 255.255.0.0

But, I don't know how to change it.

I think I either gave away my networking manual or it's stored in a box somewhere.

Thanks for your patience and assistance!
Bob

On the XP machine, right-click My Computer, Properties, Computer Name, Change, and give it a new name (without spaces).

You do not need to specify an IP or subnet on either machine, APIA will automaticly assign workable IPs if both computers are set in TCP/IP Properties to obtain an IP address automaticly.

Rather than a guide, run on the XP machine the Network Wizard, and let it create a setup diskette as well for the laptop.

Run the network wizard
click start.. .. my computer...
click on my network places on the left side
click on set up home or small office network

Thanks for the assist, bcastner!

Worked as you stated, now just verifying that I copied all needed files. And it was REAL fast initially... Just doing a copy creates links in a heartbeat. Not so good after disconnecting the computer the files are actually stored on! Easy enough to resolve and then transferred data at 100mbs.

Thanks to others who posted, also!
