As per recommendations we should have /opt,/usr,/var on different partitions for better performance. While installing solaris 8 on intel Pentium-III PC, we get only four choices for creating partitions. Whereas the number of partitions required on the boot disk (if considering the recommendations) are more than five, how to create such partitions ?

Can anyone help ?

Thanks In Advance

As long as you make the root partition big enough you should be able to put /usr on it without any issues.

Does Solaris 8 x86 not support extended partitions? Annihilannic.

rajeshbahl: this recommendations are obsolete
the pourpose of that was: backup
nowaday the backup media are large enough.
sure, if you need to RESTORE /var only, a /var partition is very helpfull.
let all in root, you will save space, make root big enough, like it subjested Annihilannic.

The reason for having a seperate root ( / ) filesystem is in case you have a problem that creates large log or error files ( which are mostly in /var filesystem )
A seperate / filesystem will let you boot the system and remove files to clean up another filesystem. A / filesystem that is full might mean you have to boot from CDROM to cleanup and get your system operational again.
