hi all,

I'm learning 10g by mostly using the GUI tools.

After connecting to a database (in Enterprise Manager console), I'm unable to use the manual Backup feature.

When I click Tools--> Database Tools--> Backup Management-->Backup it displays "Use the Enterprise Manager 10g Console for Backup Management".

But that's what I'm using..... !

This behaviour is consistent for all the services I connect to, so I'm probably doing something wrong.

Any ideas? Thanks, John

In 10g the dbconsole is web-based, the console you install on a client does not have all the functionality.

To activate the web-based dbconsole, go to the database server and:

1) Check if console is configured:

emctl status dbconsole

If console is configured it will give you the URL or else will let you know it is not started, if not started then:

emctl start dbconsole

2) If console NOT configured then do:

emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create

And start the console.

Thanks LKBrwnDBA.

I had previoulsy configured the console on the server. I connected to the db server via Remote Desktop and, as you said, the browser-based console worked.

I still say they should remove the 'Backup' option in the gui console since you have to use the web-based console to do that.

Thanks, John
