confuse...VPN & IP address

Hi, there
there is something about IP address in Vpn confuse me, I hope some one can give me help.
before I use vpn I connect internet,The ISP assign an IP to me with default gateway and DNS server address,then I connect with VPN server,I got another Ip with default gateway and Dns server address.So I got two IP address One Public IP one internal IP, and two default geteway two DNS server.
I just want to know how my computer handle these two ip address, when i set packet to somewhere how the system choose dns server for name resolution and gateway for sending data?
Thanks for any clue.
