Hello,

How do I configure a HP ProCurve 2424M Switch to receive time information from a Cisco 2500 Router?

I have the Cisco 2500 router and the HP ProCurve Switch on the same network. When I check the event log, the HP Switch can't find my router.

Thanks

The Switch 2424M can be a TimeP or SNTP client. If the Cisco 2500 can be either a TimeP or SNTP server, then configure it to be the appropriate server, then configure the 2424M as the appropriate client. You can find instructions for configuring the 2424M as follows:

For TimeP, see ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/59692320.pdf, page 6-7.

For SNTP, see ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/59692375_e1.pdf, page 40.

Ralph

Hello,

What do you do if you have to VLANs set on the HP Switch and the second vlan has the same network as the Cisco 2500 router. I can I then set the time server on HP?

Thanks

Hello 1935 -

I am sorry, but I do not understand what you mean by "the second vlan has the same network as the Cisco 2500 router". Do you that they have the same network (that is, IP) address, or that they are on the same IP subnet, or something else?

Also, by your comment, "can I then set the time server on HP?" I assume that you meant "ca I then set the TimeP (or SNTP) CLIENT on HP?", right?

Regards,
Ralph

1. When I am referring to the second vlan, I am talking about the ip address. I have 2 VLANs configured on this switch. And yes I meant setting the TimeP Client on HP.

2. I do have a HP 212M Switch that has the default vlan that is configured with an ip address of 10.253.253.x which is on the same network as the Cisco Router. When I go into the switch and configure the Time Protocol as Manual and set the Time server as 10.253.253.x which is the ip address of the Cisco router. It doesn't do anything. What is the cause of those two issues?

Thanks!

1. I am still not clear what you are saying regarding the IP configuration. What are the IP addresses and subnet masks for the 2525M and 2500?

2. I don't have a 212M in front of me, so I will assume that it is similar to a 2424M. On the 212M, if there is a "Status and Counters - Management Address Information" menu screen, what does it report for the "Time Server Address"? Can you ping that address from the 212M?

Regards,
Ralph

Hello,

My ip address for the HP Switch is 10.253.253.230. Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0. The ip address for the Cisco 2500 Router is 10.253.253.231. Same subnet mask as the HP Switch.

The time server ip address is 10.253.253.231.

Hello 1935 -

What version of switch OS are you running on the 2424M and 212M? There have been some TimeP fixes.

Also, did TimeP ever work for either of these switches?

Regards,
Ralph

The OS Version I am running for 2424M is C.07.01 and the OS Version I am running for 212M is D.05.04. TimeP has work yet. This is my first time trying it.

1935 -

Do you have a different TimeP server that you could set up as a test case?

Regards,
Ralph
