When I load Linux i get this error

"Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission Denied)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device"

I am using Debian 3.0 with just a crappy ol onboard sound card off a A7V333

Can someone point me in the right direction here.

Make sure you have the proper drivers. Check the Debian site and the site for the mobo.

Maybe the drivers are installed and working, but your user doesn't have permission to access the device. Do an 'ls -l /dev/dsp', and add your user to the group that 'owns' it (probably audio), and do a 'chmod g+w /dev/dsp' in case group can't write to it. Logout, log back in, should be ok (if this is all permission problems). --

Wooohoooo! Thanks for that JR.

My fresh install of MDK9.1 had a similar problem where there were no visible errors (not that I could see anyway) but there was nothing coming through the sound card.

Following your instructions I found two things wrong:

1) /dev/dsp group and owner were both root
2) The 'audio' group had no members

I fixed the problem by using 'chgrp' (for the first time too I might add - ooooh, this is exciting!! *grin) and then adding active users to the 'audio' group.

Thanks for giving power to the noobs!
