HI, I HAVE A CISCO 1600 AND A CATALYST 2900. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CONFIGURE THEM WITH HYPERTERMINAL(TELNET).THE PROBLEMS ARE:
1.THE CONSOLE CABLES I HAVE ARE RJ45 TO DB9F, MY LAPTOP HAS A COM3 BUT ITS A DB15F.I HAVE BOUGHT A GENDER CHANGER WHICH ENABLES ME CONNECT THE DB9 TO DB15 ON THE LAPTOP. I HAVE CONFIGURED THE TERMINAL 9600,8,NONE,1,NONE.
2.EACH TIME I TRY CONNECTING IT GIVES ME THE MESSAGE"ANOTHER PROGRAM IS USING THE SELECTED TELEPHONY DEVICE".AT THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE HYPERTERMINAL SEESION IT SAYS DISCONNECTED.MY LAPTOP HAS JUST ONE COM PORT, THE ONE AM CONNECTED TO.
PLEASE I NEED HELP URGENTLY, BECAUSE I CANT DO ANY HANDS ON PRACTICE.I DONT THINK I HAVE SEEN ANY COMPUTER/LAPTOP WITH A DB9M.
PLEASE WHAT DO I DO

au65nze,

First - STOP YELLING! - using ALL CAPS is considered YELLING and is not proper in a forum, it is much harder to read and should be used only when trying to make a POINT!

I just checked my own computer and under the modem settings (which I do not use ) I saw that the modem was assigned to COM 3 - on your laptop - most that I have seen have built in modems - check to see if that is assigned to COM 3 - I will bet that is what is already using your COM port.

All else appears to be in line.

Hope that helps!

First, understand the difference between serial and Telnet communications. These days Hyperterminal can do both but is my first choice for neither.

Second, I haven't yet seen a 15-pin serial connector, just DB25 and DB9. The 15-pin connector is typically for video. If you laptop has no DB9, you might just have a problem.

Try a Windows forum, since this is unrelated to Cisco. At first glance, I suspect ciscoguy33's right- if it claims the device is in use, try to find out what's using it.

Thanks for your info, most appreciated, how do I find whats using com3, can I reassign it temporarily and use the com port for what am trying to achieve. Sorry for the CAPS it wasnt yelling.

au65nze,

lgarner had some good points in his post about checking a Windows forum to ask advice about configuring Windows etc. - this is a Cisco certification forum - might not find help as fast as you need it in here :)

Having not played with modems in a long while - my best guess would be to go into control panel under Modem and try to disable it - I am just guessing - the Windows forum would be a better place for this question now.

You also might want to check your laptop documentation as lgarner said and make sure that you are dealing with a COM port.

Just some thoughts!

I suspect your laptop doesn't have a serial connection db9. You probably only have USB ports, especially if this is a newer laptop. Don't mess with the modem on COM3.

What you need it a gender bender from USB to DB9M. You can get them on e-bay from several sources for less than $20. The only gotcha is that some of the converters don't support the "BREAK" sequence for password recovery. Be sure to ask the seller to verify if the converter will support the Cisco Break sequence through the converter.

After you have the converter, it'll be COM1 most likely and your terminal program will work just fine. Be sure you install the correct drivers for the converter, too.
