I have installed Windows NT server on a Compaq Deskpro.(PII 266, 64MB Ram, 6 gig hd, 12x cdrom, Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded UTP controller (built-in network card), ESS 56K internal data fax modem & Matrox video card).
During the installation, the network card and the modem were not detected. And finally, there was an error message: "The Network failed to start (0x00000042a). If you retry you may go back & check previous settings, then when you return to this page Windows NT will try to start the network again. If you cancel, Network setup will be cancelled. You may retry to configure networking on this computer after completing the rest of setup by using the Network Control Panel." However, the installations was completed. I still have no idea what the error message means and can't seem to find a way to reconfigure the network card and the modem. Can someone give me some pointers. Thank you in advance.

I assume that, when the NIC was not detected, you did not supply the software from the manufacturer (ie Compaq), or choose an alternative from the list.

I hope I am not merely stating the obvious when I say the network could not start because the services and protocols were unable to bind to the adapter because there was no driver installed.

If it is a plug and play NIC, simply power down the computer, take out the card, boot it up, power it down again and re-insert the card. NT will detect the presence of a new card, but may be unable to find appropriate drivers. You must either choose one from a list (this option will be given to you) or install one from a diskette containing the most up to date driver. This should be available from Compaq's website.

The same applies to your modem.

The alternative is to double click the Control Panel icon on your Start Menu, and choose Network - or Right-click Network Neighborhood and choose properties. Both will take you to the same screen. Here there is a tab labelled Adapters, and I believe it is self-explanatory from here.

In many cases, NT will also detect a legacy ISA card but, again, may not find suitable drivers and should offer the options.

I hope this information is of some use.

Also, go to your devices window and see if there are any conflicts.

kjonnnnn,

Conflict resolution on NT servers is a very last resort thing, and really belongs to DOS days!

The best thing about plug and pray, sorry, play, is that most of the time it does actually work. A modern motherboard will contain bus mastering and other *cool* technologies that sort out most resource duplication issues.

However, I have to agree that this does sometimes need to be done.
