We are running AIX 4.2 on an RS6000. We currently have AIX successfully sending messages across to our MS Mail server using sendmail & named. We are in the process of upgrading to Exchange 2000 on a different server and would like to add the new exchange server as an alternative destination. Although it appears as though I have reconfigured the named service OK, mail sent to the exchange server does not reach its intended destination. Is reconfiguring the named subsystem all I needed to do or do I need to do something with sendmail as well? I have restarted named and rebooted the system.

Thanks,
Robinz

Hi Robin,

Two questions:

1) Can you ping the *name* of the new exchange server from the RS6000?

2) What did you do to direct traffic to the new exchange server?

3) Have you checked the MS Exc documentation for any special upgrade steps you need to take to configure exch as an SMTP gateway?

(ok -- that's three questions, I lied) Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for replying. Yes, I can ping using the *name*. To direct traffic I editted the following :

Add *name* and IP address to /etc/hosts.

named.data - line added as follows :
*name* IN A *ip address*

named.rev - line added as follows :
3 IN PTR *name*.*domain*

To test, I run mail interactively from the command line.

In exchange smtp config we have added the appropriate ip-addr and granted access. We are confident that this is working because another (SCO-Unix) client connects OK with access granted in the same way.

More info - an attempt to telnet to *name* on Port 25 appears to reach the exchange box but then gets immediately closed. Agin this works OK from the SCO box.

(Sorry to mention SCO in an AIX forum !!!)

Cheers,

Robin

"telnet to *name* on Port 25 appears to reach the exchange box but then gets immediately closed"

Hmm -- this looks to be the key.

I would bet (I don't know, I'm a UNIX person) that there's something in MS Exch that only allows connections on TCP 25 from certain servers -- does that ring a bell? Mike

Can the SCO box connect to port 25 on your exchange server?
And then the AIX box fail to the same exchnage server ?

Is this whats happening ?

Is there a firewall that the unix machines need to pass thru. Depending on you have exchange configured you may also have to specify which servers can relay mail thru yuor the NT box.

Please provide more detail

Hi guys,

Thanks for our posts.

Mike, I see what you're saying but, at the exchange box, I've configured it to supposedly handle both the SCO and AIX boxes by adding both of the appropriate ip addresses. I agree that it is beginning to look as though the AIX is configured OK and the problem is at the exchange end.

Danny, yes, the SCO box can open a connection successfully on port 25 and the AIX box fails to complete exactly the same command. We are not using any firewalls. The exchange installation is Exch 2K on Win 2k Server.
