Hello all,

Im a newbie here and been looking at previous topics today and like the look of the forum.

Hopefully someone can assist me. I have been studying for my ccna sice start of Feb this year - I have a lab consisting of 1 x 2501 router and 2 x 2503 router and 2 1900 catalyst switches...I am using Todd Lammle's Sybex book as my text.

Currently on Chapter 5, and having configured RIP on the router, the text advises to configure IGRP over this existing configuration - when I list the available protocol's the list returned contains:

bgp
eigrp
iso-igrp
ospf
rip

and one or two others :-(

Could anyone advise why this Cisco 2501 router doesnt have the basic (and cisco proprietary) protocol IGRP

and if possible, advise if and how I go about finding and loading this type of protocol if it is at all possible?

My 3rd question is....

The text speaks about configuring the practice labs with more than the 3 basic routers which I have - for instance the one I am currently looking at uses 3 x 2501 routers and 1 x 2621 router which I am not able to configure because I dont have one. I was able to do the lab on paper only due to this.

Anyone know the best way of connecting my 3 real life routers with say a virtual termulation of a 2621 type router (as an example) as im sure further into the book the config's the netwotrks become much much bigger....

Or am I best biting the bullet and getting the Bosom simulator for such instances?

Cheers :)

Cheers

First off..I'd skip IGRP, I don't remember needing to do much of anything with it on the exam. Focus more on EIGRP and know the differences between the two.

If you are wanting to configure IGRP, check what version of the code you have on the routers. Might need to upgrade the IOS version. Cisco has a feature navigator that will help get the IOS version you need.

As for the labs. How is it wanting you to connect the 2621? When I went through my studies, I started making up some of my own labs. Three routers connected in series via whatever kind of interface you have available. For the CCNA I did some basic things like setup RIP, RIPv2, EIGRP, and OSPF. Configured NAT across them, etc. Mostly basic stuff just to see it all work.

Again, that was all for CCNA. The CCNP, I started to build some more complex labs. For both, I used the practice labs provided in the books as an example, but didn't follow them 100% based on the equipment I had available to me.

mambush,

I was at a Cisco convention in New Orleans 3 years ago and in one of the sessions on routing they said that IGRP was not going to be included in the IOS any longer. Depending on what version of the IOS you have - that might be the case!

They felt that between RIP, RIPv2 and EIGRP that they no longer needed IGRP.

As lerdalt said - spend your time on RIP, EIGRP and OSPF in a single area for the CCNA exam. I would be very surprised if you still saw more then 1 or 2 general questions about IGRP.

Just my thoughts!

ISO IGRP IS IGRP---is that Cisco proprietary? I did not think so---can't remember---I know EIGRP is...

Burt,

IGRP and EIGRP are both Cisco proprietary!

Hope this helps!

Whoops...sorry...never used IGRP except in CCNA and CCNP study...lol

ISO-IGRP is based on Cisco IGRP but is used with OSI routing (CLNS/CONP)which no one I've ever heard of uses natively. Instead, we use Integrated IS-IS and run IP over the OSI protocol stack.

IGRP for IP is gone. EIGRP supports Appletalk, IPX/SPX, IPv4, and IPv6.

CCNA/CCNP confines to EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, RIP (ptooey!), basic BGP (VERY BASIC!!!), statics, and default routing.
