These directions are for getting your HP2510 Printer to work with a 2Wire 2701HG Wireless Modem Router. The modem’s wireless Encryption is 64bit WEP. 802.11g
The printer’s Wireless is 802.11b, WEP-SHARED
Do NOT install the printer software first before using these directions. Install HP’s Software afterward.
1. Make sure the Pinter is NOT connected in any way to a PC or a Router.
2. From the controls on the printer, PRESS “Setup”, then PRESS #6, then PRESS #3.
3. Connect a network cord to the Printer and plug DIRECTLY to the back of your Router
4. Cycle the Power “OFF” then “ON” on your Printer THEN your Router.
5. Once the Router is back up wait for your printer to get a “BLUE” connection light lit on top the printer.
6. Once the “BLUE” connection light is lit, PRESS “setup” on the Control Panel of the Printer, THEN press #6, then PRESS #1 (Make sure there is Paper and ink in the Printer), then Cancel 2 times. Your printer should be printing you out a configuration Network Settings page.
7. On the Network Settings Page, look for the Printers IP#, Circle it with a pen.
8. Go to a PC connected to your network. Open up Internet Explorer. In the address bar, type in the IP address you circled on the Network Configuration page that printed from your printer, then PRESS “Enter”
9. You should now be looking at the HP interface page for the Printer. This will ONLY work if you have a “BLUE” light on top your printer. If not repeat steps 1- 8. Otherwise go to step #10.
10. Click on the NETWORK “Tab” on the HP configuration page.
11. Under the Network Settings “TAB”, select the WIRELESS “TAB”.
12. “Communication” settings should be set to “Infrastructure
13. Next, under “Network Name SSID” select “Select your Network Name SSID” then using the drop down module next to it, select YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK”. (Your wireless network should be listed if you are in range of the wireless router. Be sure your wireless router is turned on and wireless is enabled.
14. Next under “Authentication” select “Shared”
15. Next under “Encryption” first select “Hexadecimal” (Your 2wire router is 64 bit encryption, not 128).
16. Next, under the line listed WEP Key #1 input your 2Wires Wireless Encryption Key. (The modems Default Key is on the back of the router right under the modem’s Serial#. Its should be a 10 digit number in Brackets. IE: [1234567890] DO NOT INPUT THE BRACKETS!
17. Click “APPLY” at the bottom of the Screen. If all went well you should just now click “OK” and be returned to the main menu. DO NOT PANIC if the screen doesn’t reflect your changes you just input. They will still show the old options (This is an HP bug). Your settings can be verified now by doing step #6 to printer a configuration page again. The only thing you care abouyt on this page is that under NETWORK NAME, that your network is listed, Under Authentication it lists “Shared Key” and under “Encryption” it lists 64-bit WEP. Don’t worry about anything else.
18. From the printers control key pad, PRESS “setup”. Then PRESS #6, then PRESS #2, then PRESS #1. Then press “Cancel” 2 times.
19. Now remove your Network cord from the printer going to the router.
20. Go back to your PC and open up Internet Explorer.
21. In the address bar type in your IP address to your 2wire’s GATEWAY. By default it is usually set to 192.168.1.254. Enter the IP# then press ENTER. If you don’t know the Routers IP number follow steps 21a – 21c. Otherwise proceed to step 22.
21a. Press the Start button on the Windows interface. Select “RUN”. Now type in CMD. If that does not work then type COMMAND and press enter.
21b. From the Dos Prompt type: IPCONFIG (Then press ENTER).
21c. Write down the number for the “DEFAULT GATEWAY”, this is your routers IP# !!!! Now go back to step 21 and repeat using the number you just wrote down.
22. From the top of the 2wire router’s HOME page, click on “Home Network” at the top.
23. Under “Status at a Glance”, select “Edit settings”.
24. Enter in your “MODEM’S” Password. This is NOT your internet or email password. The modem has a pass word of its own. If you forgot it or don’t know it, You will need to reset the modem. CAUTION, doing this will require you to RESET ALL your DSL and network settings. Your will need your MAIN account ID (Your Email Address), and your email password. This MUST be the MAIN Account address. It will NOT work with a sub account. DON’T NOT RESET THE MODEM IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT. AT THIS POINT GET SOME HELP FROM A FRIEND OR GEEK SQUAD! You may also want to call AT&T or your DSL Provider and ask them for help if you can’t do it yourself.
25. OK, assuming you knew the modems Password, go to the section listed “Wireless Security”. Make sure under “Authentication” you select “WEP-SHARED”. Then click “SAVE” at the bottom. Close the Internet Explore.
26. Your BLUE LIGHT on your printer should now come on again and be communicating WIRELESSLY. If not, you screwed up somewhere and you’re going to need more than this document to help you.
