My primary focus is to get inter-office e-mail going. My windows 2000 domain is NSN (virtual domain NSN.com). We have a deticated internet connection, however do not have a true internet domain so will therefore be unable to use internet e-mail unless it's through our isp (is this correct?).

I have installed Exchange Server 2000 on my Windows 2000 Server. I have also added e-mail boxes / addresses for the desired users in the Active Directory.

I am using Microsoft Outlook and configuring the incomming and outgoing servers to nsn.com with the username set to the individuals designated username.

When a user tries to send an e-mail it will not allow them to log in and keeps rejection the username and password.

I am very new to Exchange Server and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

First, the way you receive mail from the Internet is to have either your ISP or yourself host the domain name and add a record called the MX record for the domain that points to your exchange server.

Second, when you set up an Outlook client you need to put the name of the server in the Exchange server spot. Don't put the domain name in that slot, but the name of the server. That is probably why your clients aren't logging in.

Try that.

Thanks for the info... My server is S01 on the NSN domain. For the SMTP address would I use just S01, S01.nsn, S01.nsn.com, or the server's ip address? Thanks,

I don't know what you mean. Do you mean in setting up the MX record? I would probably just use the IP address if that is so, especially if your ISP is going to host the domain and just point to your mail server.

Otherwise, there isn't an SMTP entry in the Exchange Server properties in Outlook.

Let me know what you mean.

What you are trying to setup are two different services.

1. intra-office e-mail - in which case - in Outlook go to tools and then services you are going to setup Microsoft Exchange Server. When you click on add it will ask you for the server name & the user name who is using that computer. Click on OK after you've entered that info and you should be able to restart Outlook and be in. (you must be logged in as the user who's outlook you setup)

2. internet mail (offered by an ISP) - when you select tools, services, and internet mail it will be asking you questions about your isp and it's "pop3", "smtp". you don't need these if you are only setting up and internal-mail system.
