Configuring a used BCM50

Hi Folks,

I am quite new to telephone systems and recently purchased a used BCM50 for a small office. I have two questions that I would appreciate a little help with

1) I have fully reset the BCM50 and have a number of stations configured and working, the BCM50 is plugged into a analog PSTN phone socket on a Cisco cable box (which maybe the problem?). In BCM Business Elements, under Resources/Telephony Resources it states that the Internal Analog Trunk is "Enabling.." and doesn't ever become enabled. Each port on the analog trunk reports "unequipped". I have tried connecting the PSTN line to all four analog trunk ports to no effect. Could this be related to the Cisco cable modem or am I missing some configuration?

2) I would like to configure the PBX and not have to come back to it, I suspect the most likely failure point is the HDD, is it possible to clone the drive and replace it?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a licence for the internal analogue trunks.
Nothing on a bcm will work unless you have a licence for it.

Look at the KEYCODE file.

Hard drive will fail so back it up. And keep a copy off line.
Yes you can clone it.

Apply patches to it from bug issues.

How are you connecting to the line.

Cable harness...user pairs 1 to 4. Trunks.

Under keycode I see "IDLE - Int Analog Trunk - 0" I presume that means I don't have a licence for it?

Can a licence be attained or is the PBX now useless to me?

To your other question, PSNT into pair 1 (DN 061)

btw, thanks for your quick response

I am not sure if you can still get a licence anymore.
What version of bcm50 is it.
Release 1, 2 ,3 ,5 or 6

When you did a full reset I am surprised you were still able to retain the licence for the phones.

What other key codes do you have.

If you have an expansion port licence then you can purchase an expansion chassis with an GATM card ( trunk module)
This will give you analogue lines

Yes line 1 is 061.

If you have a disk image or copy of the drive before it was erased you can mount the drive on a PC to extract the license file. There are several partitions so you may have to poke around a bit to find the right one depending on what order they are mounted on your particular system. Look in a folder /nn/etc for file named licensefile.txt

If you do not have a copy of the original system license file or cannot extract it from an old disk image then an official reseller/partner can still login to the avaya keycode retrieval system and get the license files for you. Problem is that Avaya does not make access to the system public. Most places will do that for their minimum charge. Shop around though, since it's all virtual nobody needs to come onsite to do it.

You will need to supply your systems system ID.
Login with element manager
Go to Configuration->System->Keycodes

Keycodes are unique to each system, you cannot get one from another machine.

Your BCM should have a site ID and it is found underneath the unit on a sticker but it can also be found on the motherboard as the site ID is actually the MAC address of the motherboard.

Post your site ID here and we might be able to help you out. There are a number of us who know a few tricks on these systems.

Firstly, thanks for the help guys - I'd be lost without this forum.

On the HDD, will any 80+GB SATA drive be ok, or are there specific drives recommended.

The site id (I think) is 001BBAFEB962.

If its not possible to enable the 4 analog lines, my system seems to have a licence to add two extension boxes so I would have to purchase a GATM4.

Is it normal for telephone systems to require separate licences for every aspect of their functionality?

"If its not possible to enable the 4 analog lines, my system seems to have a licence to add two extension boxes so I would have to purchase a GATM4."

Did you mean two Expansion Ports?
Per already noted above - It's possible to add two Expansion Cabinets if you have Expansion Port licenses.
You would then add an MBM to the Expansion Cabinet such as a 4X16 (4 trunks, 16 stations)
It was cheaper back in the day to do it that way rather than purchase Internal Analog Trunk codes.

"Is it normal for telephone systems to require separate licences for every aspect of their functionality?"

Yes, the idea was to pay for what you want and not pay for what you do not need.
Not all systems have this thought.

"The site id (I think) is 001BBAFEB962"
Look at the back of the BCM or look in Element Manger as already described above, no sense for people to chase the dragon until your sure.

"the BCM50 is plugged into a analog PSTN phone socket on a Cisco cable box"

"PSNT into pair 1 (DN 061)"

Does sound like a key code issue or you purchased a system that is missing the expansion cabinet/s and MBM/s?

Did you try clicking on the "Enable" button in resources?

Looks like you have SIP, the past owner may have been using that as you do not have the normal Trunk codes or as mentioned it was an MBM in the expansion cabinet.
You need a key code to add an expansion cabinet
You do not need a key code for what ever goes in that cabinet such as the 4X16 or 8GATM etc.

I would suggest you get a SIP line, cheaper all the way around.

You can get a free test SIP account if you want at CallCentric.com
See the FAQ's tab up top for more info/programming.

It seems that the content of my previous post was changed.

The lic file only seemed to add

# DPNSS Try-Buy
22 1 2016-08-02

and after applying it, I don't think it made any difference.

If I have to go down the route of purchasing a 4X16 or 4GATM, would anyone recommend suppliers of used parts in the UK (or Ireland)?

It seems crazy that you cannot purchase these licences now, or that they didn't just enable all functionality for users after the EOL'ed the product.

Hello John

I'm a little closer in the UK. Best to follow the link as I think I can help you out. Look inside the file for more details.

John do you have expansion cabinets installed?
Is there any MBM's already installed in them?

Hi,

I have a licence for two expansion cabinets, but none installed.

Ok so you would need:

1 Expansion Cabinet NT9T6400

And any one of these (Media Bay Modules (MB):
BCM GATM4 (4 trunks) NT5B44B
BCM GATM8 (8 Trunks) NT5B44A
BCM 4X16 MBM (4 trunks and 16 Stations) NT5B42AAAA
- best option if future expansion beyond 12 sets

The NT numbers may vary a little.

Click on the davidbromely link above to get in touch with Firebird.
