Am new to the BCM 450 and am trying to get 2 fax machines working on our PRI. They are connected as devices on the analog module. The 2 incoming DIDs for the fax machines are programmed to 2 target lines. Each target line has been assigned one DN that corresponds to the fax machine. They're set for 1 appearance/ring only. The DNs are set to use I/C for the prime line, intercom keys shows "n/a", and have been assigned the appropriate line pool access members (A and BlocB).

Capabilities are set as follows -> handsfree(NONE), HF answerback (OFF), DND on Busy (ON), Paging (OFF), ATA answer time (3), ATA use (ON SITE), Msg Indicate (NONE), and ATA device (MODEM).

We were having timing issues with the CO - but switching the timing on the PRI to 'Primary External' has resolved that (at least acccording to the CO).

However, I'm still having issues with the fax machines. I have no dialtone when going off-hook, although it will dial just fine (test dialed my cell). Incoming fax calls are answered and you can hear the beginning of a handshake - but it fails to actually establish the connection.

Thoughts on what to check?

you might need to set SDT (Secondary Dial Tone).

Wrong clocking will cause fax issues, however as I understand it's now primary external, I assume the fax machines are fine if you just dial into them if they were connected into a regular POTS line (as opposed to via the BCM). Modem is correct setting for fax on ata-2. Recommend you refer to "Configuration-Devices" manual for all the ATA-2 settings. Also ensure you have the latest system update applied. Failing this, try a different model/manufacturer fax machine.

If the fax does not have a phone connected pulg in a phone and try making calls. It also sound as if it is set for a hot line to dial the 9 for you since you get no dial tone. You should get internal(IC) dialtone first, you could even dial an extension just like a digital phone.

Forgot to mention in the original post - SDT is setup (9), no hot line established. Both fax machines work on POTS lines (tested earlier today on an emergency backup line we have). They were previously connected to a Merlin Legend system that died last week. We setup the BCM 450 in its place.

Will try plugging in a handset and see what I get. Vendor will be onsite tomorrow to apply the latest patches - will have him check the programming as well. Was hoping it was an easy change - something that I was overlooking.

I'll give the 'Configuration - Devices' documentation another look-see. Don't remember seeing much in there earlier, but the last week has been a bit hectic.

I decided to reboot the system last night "just because". Came in this morning and fax machines are working. Bizarre.
