Configure AttachMate - Mainframe

I need to know how to set up the configuration on AttachMate to get access to a mainframe. To simulate a mainframe session.
Could someone help me out with the steps and the information that I need to gather and the steps to set up the configuration.

Need to know your network topology.
Will you be using TCP/IP to access the mainframe?
Can you 'ping' the mainframe using both the network
name and the ip address?
Examples:
ping mvs

ping 178.44.23.7

ping mvs.mycompany.mynet ( mvs.ibm.com )
