Howdy,

I run five schools in Canton, MA (out side of Boston). Up to now my internet access has been through five cable connections at each school. I have purchased a T1 to host my own email and web page, along with giving additional bandwidth to the High School. I use NAT from a Linux Server. Here are my questions.

I have never configured a router before. I have a new Full T1. I bought a CISCO 2600 router with an integrated CSU/DSU. I am not sure if the T1 is PPP or Frame Relay. The Time Slots are full 1-24 and it uses HDLC encapsulation. I have a couple of questions.

1, Is the integrated CSU/DSU a serial port? I am assuming it is. I am having trouble configuring it. When I finishing configuring it and enter the command "no shutdown", the router still shows that the Serial interface is down. The LAN Ethernet 0/0 configuration is correct and works fine.

2, I am supposed to use static routing directly to my ISP. He tells me to use the default route of 0.0.0.0 with a mask of 0.0.0.0. Is the correct command: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial0 ? He told me not to use the DNS router.

I really appreciate your help on this.

Thanks,

Fairly new to using Cisco 2600 series but may have some tips.

1) When you do a "no shutdown" command you are essentialy bringing the interaface "up". However, if the other end of your connection wit that interface is not up (no connection)it will still show "line protocol down".

2)I'm not sure about the static route he wants you to issue. Why wouldn't he just give the appropriate address of the route and the correct mask? Verify the route using the "show ip route" command.

the 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 <next hop or port> just tells the router that if it does not have a route for the packet, to send out to the next "supernet" and that router will take care of it. It's very common to use this as the "default route" which is what the ISP asked for. The nice thing is even if the ISP changes their IP or router for any reason, it doesnt impact the customer as the router only cares to send the packets out to the serial interface.

Have you turned on all channels? 1-24 ? ..

service-module t1 timeslots {range | all}

You need to find out if you have a frame or not.. if so then you need to set the encapsulation to frame.. HDLC is default for a point to point static T..

You can make a loop back for the T1 by using a RJ45 and tying 1-5 and 2-4. This will let you bring up the WIC and verify at least the card works right :)

Have you configured an IP address for the serial (integrated CSU/DSU) port?

Check the lights on the CSU/DSU interface - they should be all green. Check if the "alarm" light is on - this could mean that your ISP doesn't have the line turned on yet, you're using the wrong encapsulation, wrong cable, etc.

Also, you might want to try using "autodetect" on the interface instead of manually configuring the encapsulation type.

Good luck!

Sounds like this is a PPP.
Lets say the is your route (ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 208.13.128.64) always 1 less than the ip of your interface. ( 208.13.128.65 ) your subnet mask should be 252 if you do not have a range of ip's. ( I did not see ip in the above question ). This is scrathing the surface let us know if you need more help. J.Fisher CCNA

I feel like an idiot!

It never occurred to me that the T1 line was not working correctly. That is where the problem is! Man, I wasted three days!

Thank you everyone for your help with my problem!
