I'm a bit confused on how the bits for the configuration register are set up and what each means. I've read a few tutorials, but none have given me the clarifications i need. Does anyone have a simplified way of explaining this to me? I'd really really really appreciate it.

They tell the router how to boot. Your chart should show you different settings, and what each points to to instruct the router how to boot.

NahRamp2,

We used a great little tool that Cisco gave us in the Academy - "Confreg" - it is a program that runs on your pc like a subnet calc. and it told you what the router will do with the different numbers in place and you could change them or click a list of things such as "ignore the startup config" and it would give you the config register number.

This might be it - I did a quick "google" and here is a free download for it or something very much like it -

Cisco Confreg Calc Description -
Cisco Router Configuration Calculator allows you to determine what a router will do given the register value or visa-versa.

Hope this helps!

NahRamp2,

I just downloaded and installed this software - it is not the same but it is CLOSE and very cool!!!!

It should help you understand the config registry!

It is done by John at Boson.com and it is the "Config Register Calculator" v. 1.08 -
More then you ever wanted to know about the config register :)

Very cool :)
