I have tapes in my library and run jobs to append to the tapes. It works fine until all the tapes have been written to (btw they get formatted with the same date even though the sessions cover weeks) but at the end of the last tape, the software doesn't go back and reformat the oldest tape to continue the job, it will stop and give the message that a blank tape needs to be inserted to continue the backup. Is there any setting that I can use to cause the software to pick the oldest tape and reformat it and continue the backup on its own ... any help would be appreciated .....

Append means : no loss of already backed up data on a tape, if you configure jobs to append ARCserve will never format media.
Use a rotation scheme to achieve this. When setting up a rotation scheme ( rotation or GFS ) ARCserve will allow you to append to tapes on certain days and to format tapes on other days. read the manuals about setting up these kind of jobs and congigure them the way you want,

regards

Martin
