I have an IBM T41, and it's running Debian Sarge... original install was done of the Knoppix CD.

It runs great, but I'm doing this as much for the learning as for the running. So... I want to wipe the install and start from scratch with just the debian install. The immediate issue is I want to upgrade the kernel, but can't find the XFS patch for the 2.6 kernel... and what do I care, I don't even want to run XFS, but how do I get rid of it? Etc etc... so I want to start over with the Debian install and see if that helps me in my learning any.

However, everytime I do this, I get everything working except X never goes quite right.

I'm wondering, what type of configuration information can I take off this box before wiping the current install? Is the XF86Config-4 file enough?

And as far as the rest of the configurations go, are there any recommendations you folks think I should take off this box before I wipe it?
 
I would make a backup of the whole /etc subpath.
And if you did a lot of user-configuration, the ~/.* (hidden files in your home directory) might be interesting as well - if you're not to low on memory.
You may delete it later...
