I'm having the same problem. (Using latest knoppix live CD).
If you look in the /etc/ folder you might have multiple apache folders. e.g. apache, apache2, apache-ssl, etc... I have the httpd.conf file in the folder /etc/apache but not in /etc/apache2 .
Every time I tried to start apache2 (my only option on knoppix) I had the error message that the httpd.conf file was not found. So I copied httpd.conf file from /etc/apache to /etc/apache2 . Results? Plenty of syntax errors.
Try that if all else fails, you might get syntax errors but you'll be more step closer
