Hi

I have just started a new job as a Desktop Engineer for a government agency. After being here for about a month, I have found that absolutely nothing is documented as far as configurations on our computer desktops. I would like to begin this process, but would like know if there are any standard forms that are used to document desktops on a computer.

What type of environment are you working in? (i.e. Active Directory, NIS, Novell, etc.) And what information are you looking to collect from the workstations? This is generally pretty easy to gather programmatically at no cost.

For instance, WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) can be queried with simple VBScripts to gather hardware, software, and configuration information, even down the the version of BIOS.
