I'm going to buy a PIX 506 and I'd like some redundancy for this part of the network. So I'm wondering if I should buy two, or will my configs from the 506 work on my spare 501? Basically I want to set it up and if something is wrong with it I can swap it for another and deal with it later.
thanks for any suggestions.

What are your current configs on the 501? Anything special or just basic connectivity and firewall?

basic stuff. though on the 506 i'll probably use the dmz for testing or just plain goofing off.
thanks.

Well if you get the 515 or above you can always use failover. I dont believe the lower models support it. So basically you wouldnt have to worry about physically being on site for recovery. But for just having a 506 or 501 for spare you should be ok.

thanks for that. does the failover require another 515?

Yes, you would have to have 2 515's. The bif thing is you will have to weigh the pro's and the con's. Absolute Uptime with a larger price to pay or acceptable downtime (cheaper). You can always look at Refurbs. If they are cisco certitfied you can get smartnet coverage.

The 506 does not come with a DMZ interface.

Only inside and outside, and can not add additional interfaces.
