I recently purchased an HP Pavillion 8652C computer and noted that it contained a config.sys with the following entries.

dos=high,umb
buffers=40
device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:eek:ff
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems

These entries are a legacy of Win 3.1. I don't use a config.sys in Win95 and I haven't encountered memory problems. Are they really necessary in Win98. When I phoned HP Support they advised that technically they're not really necessary but they can give an improved performance. They appear to be a potential troublespot for 'illegal operations' and 'blue screens'.

Isn't it supposed to be an improvement in the Win98 OS to have it manage memory? Does anybody have any comments on the requirements of these entries in CONFIG.SYS

Thanks, Doug

just rename it to config.sy_ and see how you do, normally those are there for DOS compatibility, but even then windows keeps a config/autoexec when booting into dos mode, win9x should load all the nessasary files somehting similar to an autoexec, only its a hidden file. so go ahead rename it, if you have problems, put it back.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

The other thing that you could try is to comment out the lines by putting a semi-colon in front of them.

fenris

I have renamed both autoexec.bat and config.sys to *.txt in both cases. No problemo except that the machine boots faster.

booting faster is a problem?
hehe j/k.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

win 98 does have a pre-programed config.sys and autoexec.bat, so renaming the ones you see shouldn't have hurt...sound like better performance, good deal...

pcheather@home.net
