In my experience, the automatic update is tempermental at best. It is typically easiest to build a .reg file that will update the manual update key and roll it out through the logon script. I have found this to be much more consistent. Let me know if you want more detailed info.

Hi,
try to rename your policy file to 'ntconfig.pol', because this is the standard Filename a client is looking for if you are useing automatic mode for policy download.

This file must be located on the PDC and every BDC of your Domain.

formore details look at:
this brings you to 'Guide to Windows NT4.0 Profiles and Policies (Part 1 of 6)'
These series of articles describes very good how to use policies and profies with NT and Win9x.

hope this helps...

Unless my memory is failing me, 9x clients look for config.pol in the netlogon share of a DC vs NT which looks for ntconfig.pol in the same share. This is primarily due to differences between the policies for these clients.

I cant rename it ntconfig.pol becasue we already have a ntconfig.pol for our windoes 2000 (nt5) clients!

mcconmw is correct. 9x clients look for the config.pol file located in the netlogon share at logon.
Do you have a bdc also. I set ours up with the config.pol file in the export directory with replication to copy it to the import directory of the bdc. This works fine for me.

Good luck!

Hi,
I had the same problem you had, and I finally just figured out what I was doing wrong. You can't make Windows 95/98 policies in windows 2000. What you have to do is install the latest policy editor (windows 2000?) on a 95 or 98 machine, and then make the policy from that machine. When I tried to open my "non-working" config.pol, that I made on a windows 2000 machine, from windows 98, it said that the file was corrupt. So I just installed SPE, from windows 2000 server CD, on a windows 98 machine and created the policy again, and now my 98 machines are taking and applying the policy. Hope this solves it for you.
