Conditional Formatting with List boxes

It seems conditional formatting can only be done with text boxes as opposed to list boxes...? This is the conclusion i have come to after trying for hours to find a way to change the cell colour of a In/Out List box field when it's displayed as "Out".
Any suggestions.
